Case Study – Transforming Concrete Staircase, Crutt Joinery Kilkenny

When it comes to staircase design, even the most solid concrete structure can be completely transformed with the right materials and knowledge. This project in Kilkenny involved cladding a concrete staircase with solid oak steps, Corby design newel posts, spindles and handrail components from George Quinn Stair Parts Plus.

The Challenge

The property featured an entrance hallway with a concrete staircase. The homeowner wanted the classic look from the Corby staircase collection design with a mix of white oak and paint, along with a feature scroll and wreath to the belled bottom bullnose step. The goal was to achieve a premium look with durable products, and timeless design.

The Solution

The Crutt Joinery decided to overlay the concrete stairs with George Quinn Stair Parts Plus high quality 285x28mm solid oak steps and Corby collection stair parts – the traditional and exclusive stair parts collection. Corby collection is a testimony to blend timeless elegance with structural strength.

The concrete was clad with solid oak 285x28mm steps, painted string and risers. We recommend using our 285x28mm solid oak steps for concrete staircase as the step itself will cover the riser without any additional work. The square-edged steps allowed the joinery company to machine a bullnose front edge. In this project, the team also returned the bullnose on the side. Because the steps are completely solid construction there is no problem in sanding.

The customer chose to use George Quinn Stair Parts Plus Corby oak handrail and matching handrail components including scroll & wreath, easer, mid ramps, 90° Bend and SP 90° Bend.

Crutt Joinery received the Corby spindles in a primed paint finish, needing only a light sanding and a final coat of paint. The customer lacquered the oak stair parts with three coats of clear lacquer to keep the timeless warm grain of oak.

The Result

The finished staircase is a stunning example of how simple solid cladding steps can completely redefine a space. The contrast between white spindles and risers, with the warm oak handrail and steps, creates a sophisticated balance of strength and elegance.

The transformation delighted the homeowner, who appreciated how quickly, cleanly, and durably the work was done. This staircase now stands as a home feature, blending modern and traditional design with classic craftsmanship.

This project shows how the well-chosen cladding can transform a staircase with style and practicality.
