With the rising cost of raw materials, resources have become even more scarce and precious.  This has resulted in the industry looking at new methods of producing quality stair parts. This is achieved by maximising the use of the whole tree by creating a range of engineered products that are made from solid wood.

Some of the advantages of Engineered stair parts are:

• The quality of the parts are consistent: good colour matching and the usual deficiencies in the wood, like knots, are removed at the manufacturing stage.
• Due to the manufacturing process, the parts do not crack, split or warp.
• The stair parts tend to perform better as they have higher load bearing abilities.
• You know the exact price of the stair part as there are no machine costs and no waste product.

At George Quinn, we have the following Engineered products, within our stair parts ranges:

Steps

Steps are composed of internal solid wood finger joints and have a 4mm solid unfinished layer which can be sanded, stained and varnished. The front edge has a solid bullnose round finish. These engineered Steps are available in White Oak and Walnut and come in different lengths: 1,000mm, 1,200mm & 4,500mm.  They are 270mm wide and have a thickness of 28mm.  The steps have an A and B side, with one joint on the A side which is well colour matched.

Risers

Risers are composed of solid wood finger joints and have a 3mm solid unfinished layer on both sides.  They have square edges and can be sanded, stained and varnished.  These engineered risers are available in White Oak and Walnut and come in lengths of 1000mm and 1200mm.  They are 210mm wide and have a thickness of 18mm.  The risers also have an A and B side, with one joint on the A side and are well colour matched.

Strings

These are solid wood finger joints and have a 4mm solid unfinished layer and can also be sanded, stained and varnished.  They are available in White Oak and Walnut and are 4500mm in length, 230mm in width and have a thickness of 40mm.  The strings have an A and B sides, surrounded by 4 pieces of colour matched veneer.

Squares

The engineered squares are composed of solid fingers of wood surrounded by an unfinished 2mm layer on all sides.  They are available in White Oak and Walnut** and come in the following lengths:  900mm, 1100mm, 1500mm and 2100mm and are 91mm x 91mm.  These engineered squares can be used as a Base or a Newel Post to give your stair case a contemporary or modern look. Due to the internal make-up of the squares, turning or chamfering is not recommended.

** Our Walnut Engineered products have a light stain pre-applied to give a consistent colour.  They should not be sanded until after the first coat of lacquer has been applied.
