Stair Safety Checklist: Signs Your Stairs May Need Repair

Your stairs should be safe, sturdy, and built to last — but even the best craftsmanship can show signs of wear and tear over time. This blog will help you spot early warning signs, so you can address issues before they become expensive problems.

  1. Listen for creaks or squeaks
Frequent creaking can mean treads or risers are loose, or joints are opening up.
  2. Feel for movement underfoot
If a step feels springy, wobbly, or bounces slightly, it could indicate a loose fixing or worn joint.
  3. Check the handrail and newel posts
Gently push them — they should feel solid. Any sway or looseness means the fixing needs to be checked.
  4. Look for gaps
Visible gaps between treads, risers, and stringers (the side supports) can point to timber movement or joint failure.
  5. Inspect fixings
Where visible, check screws and nails for rust, looseness, or signs they’re pulling out.
  6. Watch for cracks or damage
Cracks in timber, especially near joints or stringers, can weaken the entire structure.

If you notice one or more of these signs, it’s a good idea to call a professional to discuss repairs or replacements.
Regular checks keep your stairs safe, silent, and solid for years to come!
